Make the Road by Walking is a 501(c)3, membership-led organization based in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Our members are primarily low-income Latino and African-American residents of Bushwick and surrounding communities.

We promote economic justice and participatory democracy by increasing residents' power to achieve self-determination through collective action. Our multi-faceted approach includes:

» Organizing and Activism to build a stronger community and make governing institutions subject to democratic community control.

» Collaborative Learning to enable people to advocate effectively for themselves, analyze the root causes of problems, and strategize about how these problems can be collectively resolved.

» A Community of Support to provide essential services to residents, in order to affirm an ethic of cooperation, mutual help, dignity and animo.

Make the Road by Walking's multi-generational membership works for justice and opportunity on both local and city-wide issues through community organizing, leadership development, and direct services.
