Founded in 1998, GLOBE (Gays and Lesbians of Bushwick Empowered) combats institutional homophobia and the harassment, isolation and invisibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Bushwick and the surrounding neighborhoods. Recent Accomplishments
» Responding a hate crime against a young African-American gay man in East New York, GLOBE organized a candlelight vigil in front of Brookdale Hospital, where the victim was in critical condition this July. The vigil, which attracted over 50 supporters, brought to light the severity of anti-gay hate crimes in Brooklyn and the necessity of a strong police response to such crimes.
» GLOBE continues to offer a refuge and forum for LGBT members in and around Bushwick. GLOBE members launched an ambitious and innovative Safe Schools campaign to challenge individual and institutional homophobia at neighborhood high schools, and to educate students and faculty about the LGBT community. The campaign has lead three neighborhood high schools to create comprehensive new action plans to combat homophobia. These plans call for teacher and student training and expanded curricula, among other things. » After years as an all-volunteer project, GLOBE was able to hire its first full-time staff member, GLOBE founder Dee Perez, in July 2005. Make the Road by Walking is thankful to the Andrus Foundation, the Paul Rapoport Foundation and the Stonewall Community Foundation for making this a reality. With full-time staffing, GLOBE will be able to expand its Safe Schools Campaign and expand its work in coalition with other LGBT groups in New York City.
