The Legal and Support Services Department coordinates and conducts litigation in support of immigrant workers; provides extensive "Know Your Rights" trainings and skill-building workshops; assists Spanish-speaking immigrants with translation and communication in an English-speaking world; and advocates on behalf of immigrants within the contexts of employment, public benefits, public education, and access to services. The Department also provides free or low-cost legal representation where advocacy alone is insufficient to resolve a problem and provides services like a food pantry to help our members meet immediate needs.

Through our legal and support services, Make the Road by Walking has secured over $1,000,000 legally owed to New York City immigrants because of unpaid wages or unlawfully withheld government benefits.  This legal intervention is vital to helping our low-income members keep a roof over their families' heads or food on their tables.  In particular, such intervention is vital to helping women in violent relationships to attain economic independence in order to seek out a safe environment.

We have assisted a growing number of neighborhood tenants in forcing their landlords to address housing code violations, securing heat for freezing families in the wintertime, and repairing leaking ceilings. Additionally, our weekly food pantry provides nearly 200 community residents each month with assistance in meeting basic nutritional needs.
