Intern or Volunteer with Make the Road by Walking
We need committed, smart, creative people from all backgrounds to help us fight for justice in New York City. Positions are unpaid, but you'll be contributing your time and efforts in important ways!
General Maintenance
Got painting experience? Like to build things? Have tools? Building maintenance assistance is always needed at Make the Road by Walking such as painting, building tables and storage areas and making overall general improvements to the facilities. Volunteer your valuable expertise in carpentry, painting, plumbing or electricity, and you'll become involved in improving the infrastructure of our organization and saving us valuable dollars. Your committment is flexible to fit your schedule (could include weekends) or on an as-needed basis as projects/problems arise.
Copy Translators
Because our organization is bilingual, we need a variety of translation services. We are looking for volunteers who can translate from Spanish to English, English to Spanish, or both. Volunteer committment is on an as-needed basis.
Computer Technicians
Technology is at the root of our organization--and high maintenance. If you have professinal experience maintaining Windows machines in a networked environment, this volunteer job is for you! You will troubleshoot computer problems, install software, upgrade machines, and perform inventory. In addition, if you have teaching experience, can speak Spanish and are interested in offering workshops to our staff or members, we would love to hear from you.
Special Events Volunteers
Make the Road by Walking hosts a variety of special events throughout the year. We always need help--from planning, obtaining donations, to the actual event itself. Committment is on a project basis and can be several months before the event or the day of the event. Contact us and we'll add you to our email list and notify you when we need help for special events.

Legal Interns
Our Legal interns are usually law students. They work on a variety of legal research projects and cases related to economic and workplace rights. Ability to speak Spanish is preferred as a majority of our clients are Spanish-speaking only. We offer internships throughout the academic year (semesters) and the summer. Positions are limited, so to be considered, please contact Deborah Axt with a cover letter, resume and timeframe.
Tutors for Cool, Motivated Elementary and High School Students
If you are interested in assisting our youth organizers in their education, tutoring is a great way to get involved in Make the Road by Walking. Tutors meet with students at least once a week for a couple of hours. Commitment is important to this position--not only do you assist youth with their studies, but you form a mentoring relationship with them. Volunteers are recommended to commit for the entire academic year (September to June), or for the summer. Positions are limited. For more information, please contact Oona Chatterjee.
